Renewable Energy Challenge Workshop

Overview

Who: 4th -12th grade teachers interested in bringing students to the Renewable Energy Challenge or even just in facilitating hands-on, renewable energy engineering projects with their students. Stipends available for educators from the Oregon Coast STEM Hub region: Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Coos, Curry and coastal areas of Lane and Douglas counties.  

 

What: Receive up to  4 hours of professional development learning about the different components of the Oregon Coast Renewable Energy Challenge. This year, the competition will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, OR. At this training, participants will learn from competition coordinators, technology experts, and fellow teachers to explore how to help students build a renewable energy device for the competition.  All participants will receive a KidWind kit as well as wave and solar energy materials prior to the training.

 

When: Wind: January 7th 4:00-6:00pm, Solar/Wave: January 8th 4:00-6:00pm

 

Why: Learn about this annual challenge and get pointers on how to build devices powered by water, wind and light.  Develop new methods to engage your students in engineering, problem solving and technology while learning about renewable energy.  Teams that win at the regional competition in the Wind category are invited to compete at the World KidWind Challenge in Phoenix, AZ.   

 

Additional Details: Stipend of $60/session are available for teachers from the Oregon Coast STEM Hub region upon completion.  Due to the nature of the workshop and shipping materials, registration will close Dec. 30th.
