The Oregon Coast STEM Hub was formed in 2014 thanks to the vision and leadership of several coastal partners and funding from the Oregon Department of Education. Since its inception, the OCSH has provided 22,000 hours of student STEM experiences, 9,020 direct hours of educator STEM professional development, and nurtured partnerships with 64 separate entities located up and down the Oregon coast - from Brookings to Astoria.
The Oregon Coast STEM Hub continues to thrive today and the 2018-19 academic year was no exception. In partnership with Oregon Sea Grant, students and teachers participated in several shipboard experiences as well as the annual MATE Remotely Operated Vehicle Regional Competition, the Oregon Coast Renewable Energy Challenge, and a series of Student Watershed Symposium events. New this year was our first 3-D Printing Camp for middle school students in collaboration with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and faciltation of a Teaching Culturally Responsive STEM blended-learning course including a virtual keynote by Dr. Patrick Bell and travel to the longhouse of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians.
Over the summer of 2019 we have been excited to offer teacher professional development in Early Childhood STEM, high school internships on gray whale foraging ecology, an NSF Research Experience for Teachers onboard NOAA's R/V Atlantis, and we launched the Oregon Marine Scientist and Educator Alliance.
These projects and many others continue to advance our mission and vision. A big thank you to our many partners, backbone staff, and Leadership Council. We offer a special thanks to Ruth McDonald who is retiring this year after captaining teacher professional development on our STEM voyage since its inception. Ruth, your energy and vision live on!
