Oregon Marine Science and Educator Alliance (ORSEA)

Program Details

Are you interested in a paid opportunity to collaborate with other educators and marine researchers to co-create an integrated math and science unit around a unique, local marine phenomena? ORSEA connects math and science educators from the Oregon Coast Region with marine scientists to create and pilot units centered around marine-focused anchoring phenomena. Teacher-Scientist teams co-create integrated math and science units that address coastal ecology, ocean and data literacy, and career-connected learning. Check out former ORSEA projects on our K-12 curriculum pageThis workshop is co-hosted by the Oregon Coast STEM Hub and Oregon State University with funding from the US National Science Foundation via the Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV) project. Highlights include:

  • Build community between teachers and researchers
  • Use place-based, marine phenomena to address NGSS and Common Core Standards
  • Increase student interest and awareness in ocean and marine careers

Dates and Location

ORSEA is a 8 month long professional development with both in person and virtual components. This year's ORSEA project will “kick-off” with an online meeting in November then an onsite workshop December 6-7th in Newport, followed by monthly online check-ins throughout the winter and spring.  Teachers will pilot their lessons and by the end of the school year, all participants will come together for an in-person presentation event. Teams will have through June 2026 to complete and submit a unit write-up.   

Stipend Information

The Regional Class Research Vessel Program is sponsoring stipends of up to $1500 for Oregon Coast STEM Hub Region Teachers upon completion. Graduate students selected to be an ORSEA scientist will receive a stipend of up to $1500 for their participation courtesy of the Oregon Coast STEM Hub.

Application Information

Applications for educators are due by October 15th.  Researcher/Graduate Student applications are due October 27th.

Applicants will be notified by the end of October regarding the status of their application.
